One tenth of the apples grown in the Common Market come from South Tyrol and one per cent of these come from the village of Lana, which has a long tradition of apple growing. The Fruit Growing Museum in Lana, opened in 1990, documents the historical evolution and the actual situation of fruit growing in South Tyrol.
The exhibition rooms in the "Apple Museum" cover an area of approximately 2000 sq m in the medieval residence "Larchgut" and offer not only informative but also entertaining encounters with an interesting area of our culture.
From every hundred apples grown in the Common Market, one come from Lana. The market community lies at the top of the South Tyrolean producers with a yearly harvest of 6000-7000 lorryloads (i.e. 60.000-70.000 tons). This is one good reason for choosing Lana for the location of the South Tyrolean Fruit Growing Museum. Also the Burgraviate area, as well as the area around Bozen, are known as the cradle of South Tyrolean fruit.
